‘Sesame Street’ inspires teen to play Bach

Jacob Hershman, a 16-year-old member of the Mary Symphony Youth Orchestra, decided he wanted to be a violinist when he was two years old and saw Elmo playing one on “Sesame Street.”

Little Jacob would take a pair of chopsticks and pretend one was a violin and the other was a bow. At four he was taking violin lessons, showing a natural talent for the instrument.

A student at Marin Academy in San Rafael, he’s now a soloist with the Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra when he isn’t busking in San Rafael’s Courthouse Square or at the Marin Country Mart in Larkspur.
